Recommendations Courtesy of the Three Witches
The Three Witches in Macbeth are like that one bad friend that is always trying to influence you to do bad things. Always tempting you towards evil. I will be creating a list of shows/movies that the Witches from Macbeth would recommend, most with characters that serve the purpose of being that "bad influence."
Mean Girls
When Cady Heron (played by Lindsey Lohan) comes from Africa to a new school in Illinois, she looks for a group of friends to fit into. To her personal pleasure, she ends up becoming friends with the three most popular girls in school, known as The Plastics: Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith. While Cady initially thinks that her new friends will be nice to her, they actually end up being extremely bad influences, especially Regina George. Not only is this a classic example of characters influencing others for the worse, but the Witches would be especially fond of this movie because of the fact that (like the Witches) it is a group of three that collectively serves the purpose of being a bad influence. One could argue that The Plastics in Mean Girls is an allusion to the Witches in Macbeth.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
The fifth Harry Potter movie is completely centered around the prophecy for Harry, which states that he must be the one to kill Voldemort. There is a massive battle at the end of the movie where Voldemort and his subjects fight Harry and his friends over the prophecy. The witches from Macbeth would love and recommend this movie because of the emphasis on a prophecy that has an influence on many characters in the movie, especially Harry and Voldemort. This recommendation might show how the witches like seeing the affect prophecies have on others.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
One of the main themes in the Third Star Wars movie is the iconic transformation of Anakin becoming Darth Vadar. As the movie progresses, Anakin becomes increasingly defiant of his Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and also becomes closer with Chancellor Palpatine (who is really Darth Sidious). Darth Sidious is able to manipulate Anakin and ultimately bring him to the dark side, turning him against his former friends. The Witches would recommend this movie because there are tons of parallels between it and Macbeth. Not only is there a character whose sole purpose is to tempt others towards evil in Darth Sidious, but the theme of appearance versus reality is also largely present. Darth Sidious (who is about as evil as it gets) hides behind the figure of Chancellor Palpatine. It is the leader of the senate and the Jedi council who turns out to be the leader of the dark side. Fair is foul and foul is fair.
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters
Despite terrible acting, lots of parallels can be made between the second Percy Jackson movie and Macbeth. In order to save Camp Half-Blood (a sanctuary for demigods), which is under the threat of monsters, Percy embarks on a journey to the Bermuda Triangle to find a golden fleece, which will protect his camp. First, Percy gets a prophecy from an Oracle towards the beginning of the movie. This prophecy states that it must be a demigod from Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades that will save the world from destruction. The supernatural is also largely present in this movie, not only in the Oracle, but also in the Three Gray Sisters, who are three blind witches who tell Percy that they know about this prophecy. They end up giving him coordinates to where the fleece is. The witches of Macbeth would recommend this movie not only because of an emphasis on prophecies and the supernatural, but also because the Three Gray Sisters could be a direct reference to Macbeth. This recommendation might show how the witches from Macbeth would enjoy seeing their influence still felt in allusions today.
