Living Up to My Name
I am named for my great-great uncle, Luke White. He was the oldest of five brothers, a minister, and known as a person of good character. I think I kind of look like him too. As far as the length of my name goes, I am glad that it is short, and I think is easy for others to remember. I am very proud of my last name and honored to be a part of the White family. When my dad tells me stories of how my grandfather and great-grandfather were both Rhodes scholars, or how my ancestor was Theodor Roosevelt's right hand man as a part of the Rough Riders, it reassures how proud I am to be a part of my family. My family history has motivated me to be successful in life. When I saw the statue of my great-great-great-great grandfather, Ephraim McDowell, in the Capital at age 10, I made a decision that I will my tail off in life to be remembered. In 100 or 200 years, I want my descendants to be inspired by what I accomplished. I am literally trying to live up to my name.
I believe that our experiences with being part of a larger whole can define who we our as an individual. It is the people or groups we familiarize ourselves with who, to some extent, make up who we are. I go to Millbrook High School. I am on the soccer team. I am a Christian. I am in the IB Program. I am a diehard UNC fan. These are all groups that I am a part of that help form my identity. I am often asked by others how the soccer season is going, or by people not in the Diploma Program what IB is like. This is because other people know that things like the IB Program and soccer play a large part in contributing to who I am.

Hello fine sir, I like your blog post very much. It is very interesting to understand why you are named after your Great-Uncle. You also include a lot of descriptive diction to prove to the reader your point. As far as the second paragraph is concerned, I can relate to you. We do share many personality traits in common, especially being in the IB program and being a diehard UNC fan. In conclusion, your blog post is very well written and provides a lot of emotion to provide a logical answer. Pleasure as always Mr. White.
ReplyDeleteLIVE UP TO MY NAME!! Legendary start to a blog, such a great song. I had no clue about how you were named after your great-uncle but I guess not many people would. It is interesting to see who your ancestors have impacted your life. I do agree that through IB we share the same traits such as everyone wanting to get into UNC lol. It sucks that we all get grouped together as IB kids but it is was it is. Great blog Luke, Keep posting wisdom brotha!
ReplyDeleteNice post. I'm glad you were able to find some deeper meaning in what sounds superficially like a really boring name.
